February 2017 is AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) and Low Vision Awareness month per Prevent Blindness.org. I encourage you to take a moment and revisit these pervasive eye health issues.

We have another week of fabulous articles this week on the Opticians’ Handbook for you.
Dick Whitney provides some insight to marketing claims and Preston Fassel’s article asks some very valid and thought provoking questions about fashion brand frames in our dispensaries. Both articles should make you think twice, at least.

It is motivating to know there is a bright spot each year where we can gather with optical professionals who are progressive and brimming with ideas they are willing to share. It is also inspirational to be among the movers and shakers in our profession.

This is a “feel good” week for the Opticians Handbook. Sharing these three articles this week made me feel good as well. I’m very proud to announce that one of our Contributing Editor alumni, Barry Santini, was named Optician of the Year by the Society to Advance Opticianry.

My fabulous fashionista millennial niece texted me a picture of her new eyeglass prescription last week. (What? Texted isn’t recognized as a verb?) It was a significant change as she moved from a low plus power for reading in graduate school to a low minus with astigmatism over the span of two years.

National Sunglass Day has passed, but you should not let up on your efforts to move your patients into sunglasses. The months of July and August historically have the highest sunglass sales – year after year.

Glorious summer is upon us, and it’s been a long cold lonely winter for some. National Sunglasses Day is June 27th, and all eye care providers should take advantage of the opportunity to “shine a light” (pun completely intended) on sunwear.

Preston Fassel’s article, Looking Back: Know Your Optical Heritage provides us with the usual enjoyable writing from Preston as well as a real treasure you will want to order – I’ve already ordered my copy.

Listening to the radio on the way to work this morning, the discussion (not surprisingly) was about the Golden State Warriors basketball team. As anyone in the San Francisco Bay area, and basketball fans across the US knows the Warriors are having a phenomenal, record-breaking year and will no doubt be going to the NBA finals.

Did you see all those movie stars wearing glasses at the Oscars? I was quite proud of my fellow presbyopes unapologetically wearing their glasses so they could see their cue cards. I’ve seen more than a few celebrities squinting and mumbling hesitantly as the audience was hanging in suspense to hear the results. In my eyewear enthusiast manner, I was paying close attention to each star and their glasses. Then my friend Ilene Mattison-Shupnick says to me, “Don’t they know about dress eyewear?” I was stunned for a moment and then I realized she was absolutely 110% correct.

Sitting in the optical shop on a slow rainy day and the phone rings. A man is looking for a particular Oakley sunglass made in his prescription. I located the sunglass in our Oakley case while I had him on the phone, no problem. However, he wanted it in matte black rather than the shiny black I had in my hand. I told him I would call our other location to see if they had the matte black in stock, which I did promptly. They did not have the matte black in stock either.
